El Hilali, a member of the Council of the World Taekwondo Federation, who also holds leading positions in the African and Mediterranean taekwondo organisations, previously headed Morocco's body from 2001 to 2010.

The only candidate standing this time around, he was elected with 182 votes for and 25 against.

Fouly - who is also a World Taekwondo Federation vice-president -  believes El Hilali is the ideal candidate for the job and that he can help the sport in Morocco to develop further.

"Your history with taekwondo and your dedication over the years to promote it, paved the way for your leadership of the Morocco Taekwondo Federation," Fouly said in a letter addressed to El Hilali.

"I am confident that your country will once more rise to great successes in the coming years."

Morocco had three taekwondo athletes at the London 2012 Olympic Games, including Sanaa Atabrour and Issam Chernoubi, as well as Wiam Dislam, who was flagbearer for her nation at the Opening Ceremony.

Four years previously in Beijing, the African nation had two athletes competing, with Abdelkader Zrouri enjoying good success, making it to the quarter-finals of the over 80kg class before losing to eventual silver medallist Alexandros Nikolaidis.

Mouna Benabderrassoul - who won a bronze medal at the 2001 World Taekwondo Championships - also competed in 2008 alongside Ghizlane Toudali.

Before those two Olympics, Morocco had some success at world level after Mounia Bourguigue won two World Championship medals - in 1997 and then in 2003. Bourguigue was also a part of the Moroccan team in Athens and Sydney.

El Hilali is now tasked with continuing to develop the sport in the country and to try to increase the presence of Moroccan taekwondo players at future major international tournaments.
