Reid, who had wrapped up the men's doubles crown with Belgium's Joachim Gerard the previous day, endured few scares as he cruised to a comfortable 6-4, 6-3 win to take his seventh ITF 1 Series success.

The result also gave the world number three his second title of the year and the 29th of his career.

Dutchwoman Marjolein Buis couldn't repeat the feat of Reid as the defending women's champion fell at the final hurdle, losing in three-sets to German top seed Sabine Ellerbrock.

In what was a fiercely-contested affair, Ellerbrock, bidding to become the first player from her nation to win the Pensacola Open, took the first set in commanding fashion, winning it 6-4.

But world number four Buis fought back to level the intriguing match-up by claiming the second set by the same scoreline, sending the final into a decider.

The German however proved too strong when it mattered as she dropped just a single game on her way to an eventual 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 victory to end the recent Dutch monopoly of the women's singles in Florida.

The previous seven titles had gone to Dutch players but Ellerbrock showed why she is the top ranked player in the world on her way to sealing her second career singles crown.

Ellerbrock's win capped off a weekend of narrow disappointment for Buis after she and compatriot Michaela Spaanstra lost the women's doubles final to British duo Lucy Shuker and Jordanne Whiley yesterday.

The action continues to come thick and fast for the world's best wheelchair tennis players as the next ITF 1 Series event begins on Wednesday (March 25) with the Cajun Classic in Baton Rouge, Los Angeles, where Reid will be hoping for another successful title defence.
