Mexico Guerreros sealed their place in the World Series of Boxing semi-finals with a 6-4 aggregate victory over last year's runners-up Azerbaijan Baku Fires.

The Guerreros, who thrashed the Azerbaijani side 4-1 in the first leg, came into the second contest between the two franchises with a clear advantage and they ensured they reached the last four despite a 3-2 reverse on a dramatic night in Guba.

The result means the Mexican team will now go on to face highly-fancied tournament favourites and defending champions Cuba Domadores in the semi-finals.

Murad Rabadanov got the Baku Fires off to the best possible start as he overcame Mexico’s Orlando Huitzil Ahuatl in the flyweight contest with a unanimous points decision, which gave the home side the belief that they could launch a stunning turnaround.

But the Guerreros hit back in the second bout of the night, which seemed to settle the nerves as Lindolfo Delgado got the better of Nasraddin Mammadov in the lightweight division.

Delgado struggled early on as hot-prospect Mammadov took the opening two rounds, but the Guerreros fighter eventually found his rhythm to take the match-up by a unanimous verdict.

That result gave Héctor Andrés Reyes Anguiano the chance to seal his side’s progression to the last four and it was one he took in style, beating debutant Orkhan Khasmammadov thanks to a blistering first round stoppage in the light heavyweight category.

Despite the fate of the overall tie having already been secured, the Baku Fires rounded off the night in positive fashion as they took victory in the final two bouts.

Mikhail Dauhaliavets edged a tense contest with Ecuador’s Carlos Mina by a narrow margin, clinching the win by just one point on all three scorecards.

The defeat for Mina was his first of the season and teammate Edgar Ramirez also fell victim to a late resurgence from the home side as he lost his super heavyweight clash to Haji Murtuzaliyev.

But it mattered little as the Guerreros claimed a surprise overall victory in the tie to prolong their participation in this season’s competition.

The World Series of Boxing quarter-finals continue with the first leg of Russia Boxing Team’s clash with the Italia Thunder in Moscow on Sunday (May 10).
