The International Sports Federation for Persons with Intellectual Disability (Inas) has announced the launch of their first-ever Global ID Sport Day, due to take place on June 12.

The event provides an opportunity for people with an intellectual disability to come together to celebrate participation and achievement in sport.

June 12 also marks a significant milestone for the governing body as it represents 100 days to go until the Inas Global Games in Ecuador.

It is hoped that the Global ID Sport Day will raise the profile of sport for people with an intellectual disability and will increase awareness throughout the world.

Inas also harbour ambitions that the day may become a focal point on the annual calendar by attracting support from members and athletes alike, and they will aim to get corporate bodies and the media involved in order to spread the message.

“I am proud that INAS is launching Global ID Sport Day,” Inas President Amaury Russo said.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to promote sport for athletes with an intellectual disability and to help break down barriers and grow awareness.”

The event marks another step forward for the organisation and Inas executive director Nick Parr says he hopes the world unites behind the concept.

“As the global governing body for sport for athletes with an intellectual disability, I am delighted that INAS is launching Global ID Sport Day to recognise and promote opportunities for a group of people that are all too often marginalised and excluded from sport,” he added.

“We hope that clubs, sports organisations, governments and media around the world will get behind this initiative.”
