Paralympic Games debutante, Nigeria's Ndidi Nwosu, defeated London 2012 gold medallist Souhad Ghazouani of France in the women's under 73 kilogram powerlifting final at Riocentro - Pavilion 2 in Rio de Janeiro today.

Nwosu, who returned to the sport only two years ago following time away, lifted 140kg to win her first Paralympic gold medal.

Ghazouani managed to lift the same weight however Nwosu took first place because of her lighter bodyweight.

"She is the champion and I didn't how I would beat her," said Nwosu.

"I said to myself that I could do it with the power of God.

"It was hard, she is very powerful.

"I returned in 2014 after I got married and my motivation came from seeing the others competing before.

"That motivated me to train harder."

Egypt's Amany Ali claimed the bronze medal with a best attempt of 127kg after receiving some tragic news ahead of her competition today.

"I have trained four years away from home, and I have promised my father I would win a medal," she said.

"He just passed away two days ago while I was here in Rio.

"This medal is for him, is for my dad."

Meanwhile, in the second women's event of the day Nigeria's Bose Omalayo won the women's under 79kg gold medal.

The 27-year-old managed to lift a world record 138kg on her second attempt which proved decisive.

"I made it good, it was the time of my life, this Paralympics," said Omalayo.

"I've made Nigeria proud and I've made my fans proud.

"I broke the world record and I would lift more weight if I needed to, it was not my best day today."

China’s Xu Lili took the silver with her second round lift of 135kg, while Chinese Taipei’s Lin Tzu-Hui achieved 131kg in the third round to snatch bronze away from Mexico’s Perla Barcenas.

Elsewhere, Iran’s Majid Farzin claimed victory in the final event of the day, the men's under 80kg competition.

Farzin's second attempt of 235kg was enough to secure victory, despite the 32-year-old going on to set a new world record, lifting 240kg in the third round.

Gu Xiaofei of China failed to achieve the same weight as Farzin, but took the silver medal with a best attempt of 228kg.

"I'm delighted and I thank God I was successful," said Farzin.

"With the hand of God I was able to win this medal and break the world record.

"Rio 2016 will always be in my memories."

Uzbekistan’s Akhror Bozorov claimed the bronze.

He failed his first two weights, but managed to lift 207kg on his third and final attempt to secure a medal.
