Hadi Hassanzada has become the first Para-taekwondo athlete to compete at an international competition under the flag of the Taekwondo Humanitarian Foundation (THF).

The THF, established by the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF), aims to teach the sport and related educational programmes to refugees and displaced persons worldwide.

Projects run by the THF are underway in Syrian refugee camps in Jordan and Turkey, and in earthquake-struck regions of Nepal.

Meanwhile, future programmes are planned for Rwanda, Ethiopia and Colombia.

Born in Afghanistan, Hassanzada's parents fled to Iran when he was just eight years old, escaping from the armed conflict that surrounded their home and led to the loss of their son's right arm.

At the age of 20, Hassanzada left his parents' home and headed west in search of a better life.

It took him more than a year to reach Austria, after a long wait in Turkey, where he set up home in the capital city of Vienna.

Once he had settled in the city, Hassanzada joined the special needs team at Rapid Vienna Football Club.

His manager, however, asked a Para-taekwondo coach to train him even further and his talents were immediately visible.

After joining the Para-taekwondo and taekwondo club Yong Du, he was soon competing internationally.

Hassanzada then started a dedicated physical and technical training programme in the Vienna Taekwondo Leistungszentrum, after winning the Bratislava Open in Slovakia.

Alongside the Austrian Taekwondo Federation's national team at their regional training centres, Hassanzada went on to compete at the European Para-Taekwondo Championships K42 Class wearing the THF flag.

He competed in the under-61kg class in Poland's capital Warsaw.
