World bronze medallist Sarra Besbes of Tunisia defeated Russia’s Violetta Kolobova to claim the women’s individual title at the International Fencing Federation (FIE) Doha Épée Grand Prix today.

After beating Poland’s Ewa Nelip 15-6 in the semi-finals, Besbes recorded a 15-8 success over Kolobova.

Kolobova, a member of Russia’s Olympic bronze medal-winning women’s épée team at Rio 2016, overcame China’s Xu Nuo 15-7 in the other last-four encounter.

As the losing semi-finalists, Nelip and Xu shared the third step of the podium.

The FIE Grand Prix series features three events in each of the three weapons, foil, épée and sabre, and visits nine iconic cities around the world.

It is next due to stop in Mexican city Cancún for sabre from December 16 to 18.

Other than the Olympics and Fencing World Championships, the Grand Prix is the most valuable event on the FIE calendar in terms of ranking points.
