Ysaora Thibus knocked-out the world number one en route to gold at the International Fencing Federation (FIE) Foil World Cup in Algiers.

The French star, whose best individual result came in the form of bronze at the 2013 European Championships in Zagreb, won 15-10 in over South Korean opponent Nam Hyun-hee in the final.

It came after an earlier 15-10 victory over Italian rankings leader Arianna Errigo at the historic Salle Omnisports Hacene Harcha sports arena.

Nam had triumphed 15-7 over another Italian in Alice Volpi in the second semi-final.

The Italian duo had to be content with sharing the bronze medal position, but soon made amends in the team event.

A quartet also including Martina Batini and Camila Mancini beat Russia 45-33 in the final.

Russia had received a bye through the first round before victories over Poland, 45-35, and France, 45-28, to reach the final match.

France recovered to beat the United States 45-33 in the bronze medal clash. 

The Americans had been vanquished 45-36 by Italy in the other semi-final.
