Rio 2016 silver medallist Jean-Charles Valladont delighted the home crowd at the Indoor Archery World Cup in French city Nimes after claiming men’s recurve gold today.

Shooting at his home club, Valladont beat London 2012 Olympic champion Oh Jin Hyek of South Korea 6-4 in five sets to take top honours.

The match started in superb style with Valladont and Oh each shooting eight consecutive 10s before the latter posted a nine, wide right.

Valladont remained perfect for another set, but strayed out of the centre ring in the next series and allowed Oh, the 2015 runner-up in Nimes, to level the match at four set points apiece.

The fifth set saw Valladont post three 10s and Oh start with a 10 and a nine, meaning the match was over with a shot to spare.

"There is always pressure in finals but with my experience, the pressure is transformed into motivation," Valladont said.

"I play with that pressure and I like it.

"I already won this tournament, here at my club, in 2009.

"I’ve been shooting again only for three weeks and I didn’t come for the win.

"My technique was very clean and if I am in a final, it’s on the merit of my shooting."

The United States’ Brady Ellison beat first-time finalist Tom Hall of Great Britain to the men’s recurve bronze medal, triumphing 7-1.

Victory in the women’s recurve competition went to Italy’s Claudia Mandia over South Korea’s Jin Yun, winning a shoot-off 10-9 after a 5-5 draw.

Mandia settled in the middle of the match, posting consecutive sets of 30 points to take an advantage, and had an opportunity to seal it with her last arrow in regulation.

She needed a 10, but shot a nine and the match went to a tie-breaker.

Mandia rallied after Jin put in a wide nine to the left and found the middle to secure a place at the top of the podium.

Bronze in Nimes went to Britain’s Naomi Folkard, who fell to Jin in the semi-finals after knocking out the respective first and eighth-seeded South Koreans in Park Sehui - also the indoor world record holder - and Kim Eun Jung.

Folkard, who hinted at retiring from competition during her fourth consecutive Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro last year, beat Denmark’s Randi Degn 6-2 in four sets.

Denmark won both the men’s and women’s compound finals through Stephan Hansen and Tanja Jensen respectively.

World champion Hansen beat Slovenia’s Dejan Sitar 148-145, finishing with a three-10 end to settle the match.

Jensen, meanwhile, took women’s compound gold with a 146-144 win over Russia’s Natalia Avdeeva.

France’s Jean Philippe Boulch beat American Dave Cousins on a tie-breaker in the men’s bronze medal match after a 145-145 draw, while Denmark’s Sarah Sonnichsen overcame Russia’s Mariia Vinogradova 147-145 in the women’s equivalent.

The Indoor Archery World Cup is due to conclude in Las Vegas next month with action scheduled to take place from February 10 to 12.
