Denmark looked to get back into the game in the second period, with two-time world player of the year Mikkel Hansen scoring eight goals in the match.

His efforts would not prove enough as Hungary earned a surprise 27-25 victory to reach the quarter-finals.

Hungary will now face the challenge of Norway.

The host nation France discovered their opponents in the last eight of the competition, as Sweden and Belarus clashed.

Sweden emerged as clear victors, wrapping up a straightforward 41-22 win.

Germany were beaten 21-20 by the 2015 silver medallists Qatar in their last 16 match, with the winners now due to meet Slovenia.

The final match of the day will saw Croatia edge past Egypt by a 21-19 scoreline, with Spain now lying in wait. 

Today's action also saw Argentina beat Saudi Arabia 24-22 to earn a place in the 17th-place play-off.

They will meet Poland on Monday (January 23), while Saudi Arabia take on Tunisia in the 19th-place play-off.

Chile are through to the 21st-place play-off after overcoming Bahrain 35-30.

They will face Japan, while Bahrain meet Angola to avoid ending in last place.
