The Italian capital will stage the event at the Stadio dei Marmi, on September 2 and 3.

The competition, the climax to World Archery's World Cup season, is one of the most prestigious prizes in the sport with the venue situated next to the Olympic Stadium which was used for the Rome 1960 Games.

Competition will take place using both the recurve and compound bows.

World Archery President Ugur Erdener said: "Rome will become the latest iconic city to host the Hyundai Archery World Cup Final in 2017, when we visit the heart of Italy’s sporting infrastructure in the Foro Italico.

"The Stadio dei Marmi, our venue, is a nearly 100-year-old arena that is surrounded by classical statues of athletes that celebrate the history of sport and origins of the Olympic Movement. 

"Archery’s heritage spans back millennia and, in September, we’ll appreciate that past as we are entertained by the skill, intensity and precision of the sport’s best archers in world-class competition."

Italy has never hosted the World Cup Final but Varese did stage a leg of the regular season in 2007.

Odense in Denmark staged the competition last year.

"I am very satisfied that World Archery accepted the bid from Rome as the setting for the 2017 Hyundai Archery World Cup Final, one of the main events on the year’s international sport programme," said Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI) President Giovanni Malagò.

"I wish to thank World Archery President Prof Dr Ugur Erdener and the World Archery Executive Board for their trust.

"The venue is very close to the offices of CONI, the heart of Italian sports - and such a historical and special venue is ready to host spectators for a top-level competition exhibition.

"As CONI President, I will be very pleased to welcome Prof Dr Erdener, a friend of mine, who has led archery to exponential international growth over the last few years. 

"For sure, Italy has contributed to that growth, and during the Hyundai Archery World Cup Final we, as a nation, will definitely stand out."

The news is a sporting boost for Rome which was forced to suspend its bid for the 2024 Summer Olympics and Paralympics due to a lack of support from the city's newly-elected Mayor Viriginia Raggi. 

The remaining 2024 contenders, Budapest, Los Angeles and Paris, are due to hand in the final parts of their bid books to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) tomorrow.

Mario Scarzella, the President of the Italian Archery Federation (FITArco) and a vice president of World Archery, said: "The 2017 Hyundai Archery World Cup Final represents one more great challenge for Italy. 

"We have successfully organised international archery events before, such as the 2011 World Archery Championships and Olympic qualifier in Torino. 

“With no doubt, I can say that in the historical and fascinating venue of Stadio dei Marmi this September, we will live two days of excellent sport for archers and fans from all around the world."

American Brady Ellison won the men's recurve title in Odense, with Mike Schloesser of The Netherlands taking the compound honours.

Italy's Marcella Tonioli will hope to defend her women's compund title on home soil, while the defending women's recurve champion is Ki Bo-bae of South Korea.
