The newly crowned European Para-monobob champion was fastest in today’s two runs of the competition, with the overall standings decided over four efforts.

Klots clocked 1min 14.89sec in his first run down the course in Switzerland, but bettered the time with his second effort of 1:14.70.

His overall time of 2:29.59 places the Latvian in pole position heading into tomorrow’s competition, when the event will draw to a close.

Britain’s Corie Mapp had been just 0.04sec behind Klots after the first run, but a slower second saw him slip further adrift.

He will now need to overturn a deficit of 0.27 if he is to secure the world title.

Canada’s Lonnie Bissonnette, the winner of last year’s inaugural World Championships, is 0.81 down in third.

World Championship action is restricted to just the seated bobsleigh competition.

Para-skeleton athletes are competing, but with just four registered sliders their competition will not count as a World Championship.

Bobsleigh was provisionally accepted for the Beijing 2022 Winter Paralympic programme in September.

An application for skeleton to be included was not successful though, due to the sport not fulfilling a number of the criteria needed.
