The world-famous venue is due to host the inaugural European Golf Team Championships, being held as part of the multi-sport event.

Glasgow will stage the first-ever edition of the European Championships next year, with existing continental competitions for aquatics, cycling, gymnastics, rowing and triathlon all being staged in the Scottish city at the same time.

German capital Berlin will host athletics under the same banner.

The golf competition will take place at the Gleneagles course, host of 2014 Ryder Cup, where Europe overcame the United States.

It is set to feature the leading men's and women's names on the European Tour, who are supporting the event alongside the Ladies European Tour.

The European Golf Team Championships will include men's and women's events as well as a mixed competition, described as "ground-breaking" by organisers.

It is claimed the tournament will build on Scotland’s reputation as the perfect stage for major golf events.

"Gleneagles has staged many prestigious golf tournaments through its history and was the home to what many regard as the best Ryder Cup ever in 2014," Scotland's Minister for Sport Aileen Campbell said. 

"In 2018 Gleneagles will be the magnificent setting for European Championships and will see elite men and women golfers compete together for the first time. 

"In 2014 the Ryder Cup players spoke about the top class facilities, an enthusiastic and knowledgeable crowd and left with good memories and we know it will be the same for those taking part in the inaugural European Championships in 2018."

Due to be staged every four years, it is hoped that holding sports simultaneously will help increase exposure and raise the profile of the events and athletes.

Global IT provider Atos were announced as the first official partner last week.

The company, a member of the International Olympic Committee's The Olympic Partner sponsorship scheme - will be the timing, scoring and results provider.

It is expected that the European Championships will bring more than 3,000 athletes to Glasgow as part of a total delegation of 8,500, with a further 1,500 set to compete in Berlin.

The event is scheduled to take place from August 2 to 12.
