India's Ankur Mittal secured the first International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup gold medal of his career with a world record equalling score to beat James Willett of Australia in the men's double trap event in Acapulco.

The 24-year-old was beaten by Willett in the corresponding event in the season-opening World Cup competition in New Delhi earlier this month, but got his revenge with a score of 75 hits at the the Club de Caza.

The Australian finished two adrift on 73.

Qi Ying of China rounded off the podium as he claimed the bronze medal.

"I wouldn’t call it a revenge,” Mittal said.

“James is great shooter and winning and being defeated is all part of the game.

"The conditions in the finals range I would say they were perfect.

"Wind affected most of the qualification rounds, but in the afternoon it was not so strong.

"It was great to share the podium with two young shooters.

"Shooting is a young sport, and we’re doing our best do make the people appreciate what we do."

The final began slowly as both shooters missed one of their first 30 targets.

However, they took the lead together and the defining moment came in the sixth series when Willett missed three targets in three consecutive doubles.

Mittal was able to take full advantage of the mishap from the Australian to clinch his maiden World Cup triumph.

Qi ended comfortably adrift of the top two on 52 hits.

The bronze marked his second World Cup medal after he won junior gold in Gabala in Azerbaijan.

World number five Andreas Loew of Germany narrowly missed out on a podium place as he was fourth, while Toronto 2015 Pan American Games bronze medallist Enrique Brol of Guatemala was fifth.

The event continues on Saturday (March 25) with the women's skeet competition.
