The secretary general of the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) was present as the governing body backed Paralympic Day in the country.

Thani Abdulrahman Al Kuwari oversaw the event in the Gulf Nation, which took place in capital city Doha.

The Organising Committee of Qatar's Schools Olympic Programme, alongside the Qatar Paralympic Committee (QPC), helped launch the initiative.

It brought together 712 students with special needs, representing 70 schools, who competed in a variety of sports.

Rabea Al Kaabi, the President of the Qatar School Sports Federation (QSS), Ali Al Hitmi, the QSSF secretary general and Hassan Al Ansari, the QPC secretary general, were also in attendance.

Al Kuwari confirmed the QOC's support for people with special needs and "urged all sports institutions to integrate this significant category into the local society".

He also praised the community's interaction with Paralympic Day and admired the efforts made by all of the sporting institutions to organise the day.

Last month, Qatar's Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic athletes took part in a National Sports Day as the country came together for a sixth consecutive year to participate in and enjoy sport.

Sporting heroes turned out to share their experiences and advice as national federations organised activities across Qatar for all ages and abilities.

Katara, a cultural village, played host to multiple national federations which organised an array of activities.

Qatar's National Sport Day was established in 2012 with the aim of "uniting the nation in a shared celebration of sport and inspiring people to lead active and healthy lifestyles".

Qatar is one of the only countries in the world to dedicate a public holiday to sport.
