The second leg of the International Judo Federation (IJF) Grand Prix season is due to begin tomorrow in Georgia’s capital Tbilisi with 252 athletes representing 36 delegations competing at the New Sports Palace.

Competition will be spread across three days and see medals awarded in 14 weight divisions, seven for men and seven for women.

During today’s draw, which was conducted by IJF head sports director Vladimir Barta and IJF sports director Florin Daniel Lascau, a message was delivered to the coaches regarding the new set of refereeing rules still under testing.

Focus will be on "progressive judo" and more time will be given for the athletes to build positive judo.

"The rules will be applied strictly but fairly," IJF refereeing supervisor Neil Adams said.

Adams is working together with colleagues Lascau and Alexander Jatskevich, and all the departments involved in the implementation of the new rules.

The adapted laws for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic cycle were revealed in December and presented at an IJF refereeing and coaching seminar held last month in Azerbaijan’s capital Baku.

They were used at the season-opening Paris Grand Slam.

Among the revised regulations was the scrapping of the yuko evaluation of technique points, leaving only ippon and waza-ari.

The aim of the new rules is to promote more attacking judo and encourage the bout-ending ippon.

It is the fourth time that Tbilisi has hosted a leg of the IJF Grand Prix and comes after last month’s stop in German city Düsseldorf.

Among the top seeds is Rio 2016 Olympic champion Rafaela Silva of Brazil in the women's under-57 kilograms category.

Compatriot Erika Miranda is the one to beat in the women's under-52kg division, while Victor Penalber and David Moura, also from Brazil, are expected to challenge for honours in the men's under-81kg and over-100kg categories.

The first day of competition tomorrow will see medals awarded in the men's under-60kg and under-66kg categories and the women's under-48kg, under-52kg and under-57kg divisions.
