Hosts Trinidad and Tobago were dramatically knocked out of the men’s Hockey World League (HWL) round two event today after losing a penalty shoot-out against the United States.

The Caribbean island nation had gone 2-0 up against their opponents in Tacarigua courtesy of goals from Mickell Pierce and Dylan Francis.

However, a pair of goals in the last two minutes of the match from Michael Barminski and Pat Harris levelled proceedings.

A shoot-out was required to determine who would progress to the semi-finals on Saturday (April 1) and the US kept their cool to win 3-2.

They will meet Japan in the last four after they bagged an easy 5-0 victory against Barbados in their final group game.

The other semi-final will be contested between Canada and Russia.

The latter progressed after securing a 4-2 win over Chile with the European side’s goals coming from Andrey Kuraev, Marat Khairullin, Alexander Korolev and Ilfat Zamalutdinov.

Canada’s last group game saw them see off Switzerland 2-1, with all three goals coming in the second two quarters.

Scott Tupper put the Canadians ahead from a penalty corner before an equaliser came from Nicholas Steffen.

However, another penalty corner score from Tupper in the fourth quarter gave his side the win.

Alongside the semis, action in the fifth-eighth place classification matches will be taking place on Saturday.

Switzerland face Chile while Trinidad and Tobago take on Barbados.

The last day of play at the competition, which will see the top two teams qualify for the HWL semi-finals, is due to be on Sunday (April 2).
