Georgia claimed a golden double on the opening day of the International Judo Federation (IJF) Grand Prix in Tblisi as Lukhumi Chkhvimiani and Lasha Giunashvili each claimed victories.

Chkhvimiani won an all-Georgian under 60 kilograms final against top seed Amiran Papinashvili at the New Sports Arena.

He recovered from conceding an early shido penalty to produce two waza-ari's for a surprise win. 

Brazil's Phelipe Pelim and Russia's Islam Yashuev shared bronze.

Giunashvili beat Mongolia's Tumurkhuleg Davaadorj in the under 66kg final.

There was another Russio-Brazilian bronze medal section of the podium as Yakum Shamilov and Charles Chibana each won third-placed bouts.

Brazil's enjoyed golden success in the women's under 48kg division as Stefannie Koyama underlined her status as a rising star of the sport by following her Baku Grand Slam win.

The Japan-based judoka overcame Maryna Cherniak of Ukraine after a reverse sided tsuri-komi-goshi for waza-ari.

France's Melanie Clement and Russia's Mariia Persidskaia each took bronze.

Amandine Buchard of France beat Brazil's Erika Miranda to claim the under 52kg spoils.

Joana Ramos of Portugal shared bronze with Darya Skrypnik of Belarus.

There was another Brazilian defeat in the women's under 57kg final.

It came for Olympic champion Rafaela Silva as she fell victim to some super groundwork from Russian opponent Irina Zabludina as she clinched a juji-gatame for ippon.

Margriet Bergstra of The Netherlands shared bronze with another Russian in Natalia Golomidova. 

Action will continue tomorrow in the Georgian capital.
