Spanish star Damian Quintero breezed through to the final of the men's kata event with a series of dominant performances on the first day of the Karate 1-Premier League in Dubai.

Last season's Karate1 Premier League grand winner made light work of his opponents and will go for the gold medal against Turkey's Ali Sofouglu in the showpiece contest in the discipline at the Al Wasl Sports Club.

The world number one will come into the bout as the favourite but Sofouglu also impressed on his way to Sunday's (April 2) final.

In the women's kata competition, Quintero's compatriot and European champion Sandra Sanchez booked her place in the gold medal encounter, where she will take on Indonesia's Aprilia Krisda Putri, who is bidding to claim her first-ever Karate1 Premier League title.

Serap Özçelik of Turkey, the European Championships runner-up, progressed to the final of the women's under 50 kilograms kumite event.

The Turkish star will compete in her first final of the season when she goes up against Austria's World Championships bronze medallist Bettina Plank.

Uzbekistan's Sadriddin Saymatov remains on course for his third title of the year in the men's under 60 kumite category as he powered through to the final, continuing his explosive start to the 2017 Karate1 Premier League.

The rising star is scheduled to next face Turkey's Aykut Kaya, where he will bid to maintain his current winning streak.

The men's under 67kg kumite final will also crown a first-time winner of a Karate1 Premier League event as Greece's Dionysios Xenos and Iran's Saeid Ali Pour will battle for gold.

Both the men's and women's team kata finals will be between Italy and Spain.

Action continues in Dubai tomorrow.
