A 12-day arts and culture programme will run alongside the 2018 Commonwealth Games, organisers announced here today.

Known as "Festival 2018", the programme will consist of free public celebrations beginning from the Opening Ceremony of the Games on April 4.

The arts and culture programme will take place until April 15, when the Games draw to a close.

Mik Auckland, head of ceremonies, arts and culture at Gold Coast 2018, told the world press briefing here today that the programme would seek to build capacity for arts in the city while leaving a cultural legacy.

He confirmed that the internationally renowned Queensland performing arts company, Circa Contemporary Circus, had been chosen as the creative lead for Festival 2018.

The company will be tasked with curating exhibitions and building the programme for the Festival.

Gold Coast 2018 said the festival will feature "bold events, performances, art installations and interactive cultural experiences".

"Festival 2018 will shine a creative light on the Gold Coast and event cities, complementing a world class sports programme," said Peter Beattie, Gold Coast 2018 chairman.

"Reflecting diverse abilities, perspectives and cultures, the programme will challenge and inspire audiences of all ages.

"Festival 2018 will also provide a unique opportunity for the Gold Coast to grow as a cultural hub by providing the opportunity for artists to collaborate with, learn from and perform with other artists from around the world."

The Festival will take place outside competition venues, with major sites set to be established at several locations, including Surfers Paradise.

This was the scene of theone-year to go celebrations for Gold Coast 2018 yesterday evening and is due to host numerous cultural events during the Games.

Celebration zones will also be located in Brisbane, Cairns and Townsville, which are hosting events outside of Gold Coast.

Organisers hope the experience of the Games will spread to public spaces, parks and beaches as a result of the programme.

The programme will also feature Bleach* Festival performances, including the city's best artists, as well as international acts.

Bleach* Festival was launched back in 2012, with this year’s offering currently ongoing in the Games' host city.

Gold Coast 2018 are confident the programme of commissions and activities will help to support local arts and culture industries.
