Eight teams have secured their place in the men's curling event at next year's Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang following the conclusion of the round robin stage at the World Curling Federation (WCF) Men's World Championship in Edmonton today.

Canada finished top of the standings, winning all 11 of their matches, and were joined by Scotland, Japan, hosts South Korea, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and the United States in qualifying for next year's Games.

Scotland will play as Great Britain in Pyeongchang.

It also means that China, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands and Russia will now compete in the WCF's Olympic qualification event to be held in Pilsen in the Czech Republic between December 5 and 10.

That event will determine the last two teams to qualify for the Games.

Following today's action at the Northlands Coliseum the US, Switzerland and Sweden joined Canada in the play-off phase.

Sweden took second place in the overall standings with nine wins from 11 matches.

They lost their opening match today, a 7-3 defeat to the Americans, before booking their place in the next round with an easy 8-2 success over The Netherlands.

Following their sublime win over Sweden the US followed that with an 8-2 win over China to guarantee fourth place.

"The conditions were great tonight," said American skip John Shuster.

"I think the level of play that we brought out there was a combination of that and how well we're throwing the rocks right now."

Switzerland came third after they scored a single point in the final end of their first match against Japan to claim a 6-5 win.

The Swiss team lost their second match to China 8-5 but they had already secured their place in the next round after winning eight of their 11 matches.

Canada maintained their unbeaten run with their eleventh win from 11 matches in the round robin stage.

The hosts comfortably defeated Italy with a six-end 9-2 win.

They finished top of the standings and will now face second placed Sweden in tomorrow's first play-off for a spot in the gold medal game.

The loser will then play the winner of the match between the US and Switzerland for a place in the final.
