Having achieved 11 straight wins in the round robin phase of the tournament at the Northlands Coliseum, the Canadian team began as the favourites against Sweden, who suffered two defeats to end second in the standings.

Sweden faced an uphill task after Canada, led by their skip Brad Gushue, scored a point in each of the first three ends to build an early advantage on home ice.

Niklas Edin, twice part of a World Championship winning team, was able to get his side off the mark by clawing back one point in the fourth.

A scoreless fifth end meant Canada held a 3-1 advantage at the half-way stage of the play-off match.

Sweden's hopes of a comeback were briefly ignited when they scored a point in the sixth, but they were dealt a crushing blow in the following end.

Canada were able to claim three points, with Gushue operating impressively in the key stages of the contest.

Despite Sweden hitting back with two points in the eighth, they conceded defeat when Canada went 7-4 up with one end to play.

The result sees Canada advance through to the final, where they will seek to defend their title and earn a 36th gold medal at the event.

Sweden could still join them after dropping into the semi-finals, where they will face the winners of the match between Switzerland and the United States.

The teams ended in third and fourth place in the round robin phase of the tournament, with their clash set to take place tomorrow.

All four teams in contention for medals have also secured places at the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics, with eight spots awarded at the Championships.

Scotland, Japan, hosts South Korea and Norway were also able to secure places, with the final spots decided yesterday.

Scotland will play as Great Britain in Pyeongchang.

China, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands and Russia will now compete in the Olympic qualification event to be held in Pilsen in the Czech Republic between December 5 and 10.

That event will determine the last two teams to qualify for the Games.
