Morocco Atlas Lions remain in the hunt for a play-off place in the World Series of Boxing (WSB) after claiming a crucial victory against Italia Thunder in Oujda.

The hosts secured a 3-2 triumph which kept their hopes of progression alive, despite remaining bottom of the Group B standings.

Thunder made the brighter start to the contest, with Federico Serra earning a unanimous points victory over Morocco's debutante Said Bounkoult in the 49-kilogram lightweight division.

There was a quick response from the home team, with Redouane Khachfen delighting the home crowd by producing an assured display in his 56kg bantamweight contest.

The Moroccan dominated the latter stages of his bout with Riccardo D’Andrea, ending the contest with a unanimous win over his rival.

Thunder put their faith in Spanish fighter Sebastian Mendizabal in the 64kg light welterweight division, but he would fall narrowly short on the scorecards.

Morocco's Youness Baati was given the contest 48-47 by two judges, with the other scoring it 49-46 in favour of Mendizabal.

Lions' triumph on the night was confirmed when Ukraine's Dmytro Mytrofanov delivered a devastating display against Raffaele Munno.

After two rounds of the 75kg middleweight contest Thunder were forced to pull their fighter out, which gave the Atlas Lions an unassailable lead.

Thunder were able to claim a bonus point, which could be crucial in the final standings, as their Bulgarian boxer Kristiyan Dimitrov triumphed in the 91kg heavyweight bout.

He battled past the hosts' fighter Abdeljalil Abouhamda, securing a split decision verdict at the end of their bout.

Despite remaining third in the group standings, a win for the Atlas Lions against the British Lionhearts in the final match could be enough to move them above Thunder.

Should they achieve the feat, which would depend on Thunder losing to the France Fighting Roosters, they could reach the play-offs as one of the best third place teams.
