Georgia's Lasha Talakhadze broke the men's over-105 kilograms snatch world record on his way to retaining his continental title on the final day of action at the European Weightlifting Championships in Croatian city Split.

The 23-year-old won the snatch with a lift of 217kg, bettering Iranian Behdad Salimi's 216kg set at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, and then won the clean and jerk with 250kg.

It gave the reigning Olympic and world champion an overall total of 467kg and a winning margin of 21kg.

Armenia’s Gor Minasyan, the Rio 2016 silver medallist, came second with 446kg having finished runner-up in the snatch with 211kg and fifth in the clean and jerk with 235kg.

Compatriot Ruben Aleksanyan was the bronze medallist with 434kg, following a sixth-place finish in the snatch with 190kg and a third-place finish in the clean and jerk with 244kg.

Georgia’s Irakli Turmanidze came third in the snatch with 201kg, but he did not contest the clean and jerk.

Estonia’s Mart Seim ranked second in the clean and jerk with 246kg, however, a ninth-place finish in the snatch with 180kg proved costly as he ended up fifth overall with 426kg.
