South African number one Kgothatso Montjane made it through to the quarter-finals of the women's singles on the opening day of the South Africa Wheelchair Tennis Open at the Ellis Park Tennis Stadium in Johannesburg.

Montjane, who has competed at the last three Paralympic Games without winning a medal, defeated compatriot Mariska Venter in straight sets.

The 30-year-old took the first set 7-6 before closing out the match in the second 6-2.

Montjane will now face Sabine Ellerbrock of Germany, who she lost to in the last eight of this tournament in 2016.

The German was in ominous form today as she disposed of South Africa's Asive Gilifile 6-0, 6-0 in emphatic style.

Third seed Aniek van Koot of The Netherlands beat South Africa's Nonkanyiso Nyosi 6-1, 6-1 while Great Britain's Lucy Shuker sailed to a 6-0, 6-0 victory over home favourite Siphokazi Fuma.

France's Charlotte Famin saw off another South African, Nsuku Ndhlovu, 6-0, 6-0.

In the men's singles, South Africa's top junior Alwande Skhosana defeated compatriot Ewald Lamprecht 6-1, 6-0 to advance to the last 16.

Skhosana will now face Yoshinobu Fujimoto in the second round after the number eight seed from Japan defeated Thato Tsomole of South Africa 6-1, 6-0 in his opening match.

There was also a comfortable first-round win for the host nation's number two Leon Els, as he defeated compatriot Similo Basi 6-0, 6-1.

Mzwanele Thentsi came from a set down to beat Vuyisani Mantshula in an-all South Africa duel 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.

He will now will play Great Britain's Alfie Hewett for place in the quarter-finals tomorrow.

The top seven seeds in the men's draw all received byes while Diede De Groot of The Netherlands and Belgium's Marjolein Buis were given free passage into the second round of the women's competition.

Action is due to conclude on Friday (April 14).

The event is part of the International Tennis Federation Super Series.
