Olympic mixed doubles champions Tontowi Ahmad and Liliyana Natsir of Indonesia have been knocked out on the opening day of action at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Singapore Super Series.

Ahmad and Natsir won gold at the Rio 2016 Games but were in uncharacteristically poor form at the Indoor Stadium today.

The duo, seeded second in Singapore, were beaten by Thailand's Dechapol Puavaranukroh and partner Sapsiree Taerattanachai 21-14, 21-16.

Third seeds Lu Kai and Huang Yaqiong of China had no such trouble as they eased into round two with a comfortable 21-14, 21-17 win over Japanese pair Kenta Kazuno and Ayane Kurihara.

The Danish duo of Joachim Fischer Nielsen and partner Christinna Pedersen, seeded third in Singapore, overcame Reginald Lee Chun Hei and Chau Hoi Wah of Hong Kong 21-9, 21-14.

There were also qualification matches in the men's and women's singles today with places in the main draw of both competitions up for grabs.

Kwang Hee Heo of South Korea was one of those to make it through to round one of the men's singles after he beat Kazumasa Sakai of Japan 21-3, 21-16.

Japan's Kenta Nishimoto also made it through following a 21-13, 21-14 success against Yu Hsien Lin of Chinese Taipei.

Wei Feng Chong of Malaysia was also victorious. 

The 2015 South East Asian Games men's singles champion recorded a 21-19, 21-15 win against Chinese Taipei's Hsuan Yi Hsueh.

In the women's singles there was delight for the host nation as Jia Min Yeo defeated Indonesia's Jesica Muljati 21-12, 21-18 to reach round one.

Febby Angguni won an all-Indonesian affair after she beat compatriot Rusydina Antardayu Riodingin 21-16, 21-17.

There was further success for Indonesia later on as Yulia Yosephine Susanto saw off Maya Chen of the United States 21-12, 21-8.

Action is due to continue tomorrow with the tournament running until Sunday (April 16).
