Rio 2016 Paralympic champion Gordon Reid was victorious on day two of the South Africa Wheelchair Tennis Open at the Ellis Park Tennis Stadium in Johannesburg today.

England's Reid, the reigning Wimbledon champion, defeated South Africa's Leon Els 6-1, 6-1 to reach the quarter-finals.

The tournament's top seed, Frenchman Stephane Houdet, brushed aside home favourite Mpho Mhlongo 6-0, 6-0 while Belgium's Joachim Gerard also failed to drop a game in his match against Gift Lekhanyane, also of South Africa, 6-0, 6-0.

South Africa's top junior Alwande Skhosana was easily beaten 6-0, 6-0 by Japan's eighth seed Yoshinobu Fujimoto.

Lucas Sithole of South Africa moved into the final four of the quad singles event with a comfortable 6-0, 6-0 success over countryman Michael Mahlanga.

Itay Erenlib of Israel also made it through following a 6-2, 6-1 success against another home player, Bongani Dlamini.

In the women's singles Diede de Groot of The Netherlands came from a set down to defeat Lucy Shuker of Great Britain.

Shuker claimed the lead after winning the opening set 6-4 before de Groot, the tournament's top seed, showed her class to come from behind and win the next two sets 6-2, 6-2 to reach the semi-finals.

She will now face compatriot and former world number one Aniek van Koot.

Van Koot, unlike de Groot, had an easier time on court as she beat Charlotte Famin of France 6-2, 6-2.

Marjolein Buis was the third Dutch player through to the semi-finals.

She beat Nokwanda Hlongwane of South Africa 6-0, 6-0 and will now face South African number one Kgothatso Montjane after the home favourite overcame Sabine Ellerbrock of Germany 7-5, 7-5.

Action is due to conclude on Friday (April 14).

The event is part of the International Tennis Federation Super Series.
