Defending champions Sony Dwi Kuncoro of Indonesia and Thailand's Ratchanok Intanon both crashed out of the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Singapore Super Series at the first round stage today.

Kuncoro won the men's title last year but suffered a premature exit after being beaten 19-21, 21-15, 21-18 by Lee Dong-keun of South Korea at the Indoor Stadium.

Hong Kong's Ng Ka Long, the seventh seed, awaits for Lee in the next round.

"I was confident I could beat him," Lee said.

"My plan was to defend well and have a lot of long rallies.

"I am younger than him and I felt I would be stronger in the third game."

Intanon, the 2013 world champion seeded seventh for the event, also fell at the first hurdle following a straight games reverse to Japan's Sayaka Sato.

The Japanese player was in fine form as she wrapped up an impressive 21-8, 21-18 triumph.

Sato is due to play Kim Hyo-min of South Korea in the next round tomorrow.

"I wanted to be mentally strong and more aggressive," Sato said.

"I needed to be positive and believe in myself.

"I expected her to come back after the first game so I wasn’t surprised when she got those points in the second game, but I believed I could still win."

Women's singles top seed Tai Tzu Ying had no such troubles as she comfortably progressed with a 21-10, 2-19 win over Intanon's compatriot Nitchaon Jindapol.

The Chinese Taipei player is now scheduled to meet team-mate Chiang Mei Hui in the second round.

Spain's Olympic champion Carolina Marin joined Tai in prolonging her stay at the tournament as she emerged victorious from a tense battle with Pornpawee Chochuwong of Thailand, claiming a 21-12, 16-21, 21-12 victory.

Marin, seeded fourth, will go up against Chia Hsin Lee of Chinese Taipei.
