Home favourite Aya Nassiri suffered an early exit from the women's kata competition at the Karate1-Premier League in Morocco's capital Rabat, ending hopes of repeating her gold medal-winning performance from last year's equivalent event.

Nassiri was beaten by Spain's Raquel Roy Rubio in the first round before losing her repechage contest against Turkey's Rabia Kusmus.

Roy Rubio went on to reach her first-ever Karate1-Premier League title-deciding bout, where she will face 2014 European champion Viviana Bottaro of Italy.

Turkey's Gizem Sahin lost to Roy Rubio in the semi-finals, while compatriot Dilara Bozan was beaten by Bottaro.

There was also action today in the men's kata competition, which saw Morocco's Bilal Benkacem and Mohammed Elhanni both reach the final to the delight of the home crowd.

Elhanni beat compatriot Adnane El Hakimi in the semi-finals, while Benkacem overcame Turkey's Ali Sofuoglu.

Neither of the finalists has ever topped a Karate1-Premier League podium.

Among the other gold medal match line-ups determined today was that in the women's kumite under-50 kilograms category, with Turkey's Serap Ozcelik, the 2016 European silver medallist, and Egypt's Radwa Sayed both working their way through the draw.

By reaching the final, Ozcelik, 29, has guaranteed herself a third medal of the 2017 Karate1-Premier League season after claiming silver in Dubai and bronze in Paris.

Standing between her and a first gold is 2016 world bronze medallist Sayed, who is making her first appearance of the campaign.

The men's kumite under-60kg final will be between Saudi Arabia’s Abdullah Alharbi and Egypt’s Malek Salama, while the men's kumite under-67kg final pits Egypt's Ali Elsawy against Turkey's Omer Kemaloglu.

Morocco will feature in both the men's and women's team kata finals with Algeria and Turkey providing the respective opposition.

Elimination rounds in the rest of the categories are due to take centre stage tomorrow.

Finals and bronze medal bouts are scheduled for Sunday (April 16).
