Belgium's Philippe Gilbert claimed a fourth career victory at the Amstel Gold Race today after beating Poland's Michal Kwiatkowski in a two-man sprint.

The Quick-Step Floors rider added to his 2010, 2011 and 2014 victories at the one day stage race in The Netherlands after battling with the winner of the 2015 event.

The leading duo gained 15sec on the rest of the field with around five kilometres left of the 264.6km event and worked together until the closing sprint.

Gilbert, who has already won the Tour of Flanders this season, was content to sit on Kwiatkowski's wheel before bursting past the Team Sky rider in the final 50 metres.

It saw him win in a time of 6hours 31min 40sec.

He is now just one victory behind Dutch record holder Jan Raas, who secured the last of his five wins in 1982.

Michael Albasini of Switzerland and Orica-Scott won the sprint behind for third place 10sec behind.

Anna van der Breggan took a home victory in the first women's Amstel Gold Race for 14 years.

The Olympic champion attacked with 7km remaining of the 121km route, including a tough climb up Cauberg.

But she moved further and further head to eventually finish 55 seconds clear in 3:15:57

Boels-Dolmans team-mate Elizabeth Deignan of Britain won a sprint for second place among a chasing pack of five.

There was a rare tie for third as a photo finish proved unable to separate Polish champion and WM3 Energie rider Kasia Niewiadoma as well as another Dutch star in Orica-AIS' Annemiek van Vleuten.
