Tributes have been paid by the Panamanian Football Federation (FEPAFUT) to Amílcar Henríquez, after the international player was shot dead in the country's Colon province.

The 33-year-old was reportedly taken to hospital in Sabanitas after the attack outside his home on Saturday (April 15), but he was unable to be saved.

Two further people were reportedly injured in the attack and are now in hospital.

The FEPAFUT have condemned the violence and paid tribute to the midfielder, who won 83 caps during his international career.

“The Panamanian Football Federation (FEPAFUT) and the Panamanian Football League (LPF) deeply regret the death of player Amílcar Henríquez,” a statement read.

“The FEPAFUT and the LPF regret the acts of violence in general and in particular those in which the life of an elite athlete like Amílcar is lost and is waiting for the result of the investigations carried out by the authorities.

“To the family of Henríquez we extend our condolences and we ask the Almighty to give them resignation in this moment of great pain.”

Henríquez made his international debut in 2005 and represented Panama in World Cup qualifying, the Gold Cup, the Copa Centroamericana and the Copa América Centenario.

He was a member of the Panama team who claimed the Copa Centroamericana title in 2009, with the tournament featuring countries from the Central American Football Union.

Henríquez made his final international appearance last month, featuring in Panama’s 1-1 draw with the United States in qualifying from the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

Panama lie third in a six team group after four matches, which currently sees them occupy the final automatic place for the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football.

Henríquez, affectionally known a Mickey, represented the Arabe Unido team at club level.

He had previously had spells with America Cali, Real Cartagena, Independiente Medellin, Atletico Huila and Santacrucena.

Panama’s President Juan Carlos Varela has condemned the killing on Twitter, vowing that justice would be served.
