World number one Andy Murray returned from injury with victory at the Monte Carlo Masters today.

The double Wimbledon champion and two-time Olympic gold medallist had been sidelined for a month with an elbow problem.

He was broken in the first game of his first round clash with Luxembourg's Gilles Muller but the Scottish top seed recovered to win 7-5, 7-5 at Roquebrune-Cap-Martin.

Today's action at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event also saw victory for Spain's defending champion and fourth seed Rafael Nadal, who beat Britain's Kyle Edmund in three sets on his favoured clay.

Nadal, a 14-time grand slam champion who is looking for his 10th win in Monte Carlo, eventually won a topsy-turvy contest 6-0, 5-7, 6-3.

Switzerland's Stan Wawrinka was another winner today, with the third seed and 2014 champion ousting Jiri Vesely of the Czech Republic.

The three-time Grand Slam winner prevailed 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.

On a day of few surprises there was a shock when Bulgaria's eighth seed Grigor Dimitrov exited the competition.

He was knocked out by Germany's Jan-Lennard Struff who moved through 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Competition will continue in Monte Carlo tomorrow.
