Two Brazilian swimmers have ensured they will make their debut appearance at the 2017 World Para Swimming Championships after achieving the required qualifying times in São Paulo.

Cecilia Araujo achieved a time of 1min 9.10sec in the S8 women's 100 metres freestyle event at the World Para Swimming Series in front of a home crowd during the competition heats.

It proved enough to meet the qualification standard, which were set by the Brazilian Paralympic Committee, with the times being benchmarked against the fastest swims of 2016.

The 19-year-old swimmer has previously competed for Brazil at both the Toronto 2015 Pan American Games and the Rio 2016 Paralympics, but will be making her first appearance at a World Championship.

"I am extremely proud of it,” said Araujo.

“I was really nervous before the race, but when I was about to go to the starting block I decided to ignore this feeling and go for it.

“This was my race."

Patricia Santos will also debut at the World Championships after winning her S4 women's 100m freestyle heat in a time of 1:40.30.

The effort was three seconds quicker than the swimmer required, setting her up strongly for the competition’s finals, which will take place tomorrow and Sunday (April 23).

Three further swimmers also booked their World Championship ticket, including 14-time Paralympic champion Daniel Dias.

The Brazilian star clocked 1:10.83 in the S5 men's 100m freestyle to assure himself of a fifth appearance at the Championships.

Andre Brasil will match that achievement having clocked 53:60 in the S10 men's 100m freestyle, with the required standard having been set at 54:03.

He had ended in second place to Phelipe Rodrigues, who achieved 52:58 to win the heat and earn a World Championship place.

Competition is set to continue tomorrow, where more athletes will hope to secure places on the Brazilian team.

The World Championships will take place from September 30 to October 6 in Mexico City.
