Belarus will take on the United States in the final after they edged defending champions the Czech Republic 3-2 at the Saddlebrook Resort in Florida.

Sasnovich, the Belarusian number one, put the host nation 2-1 in front when she overcame Timea Bacsinszky 6-2, 7-6 at the Chizhovka Arena.

Sabalenka then had the chance to secure Belarus' spot in the final against either the United States or defending champions the Czech Republic when she took on Viktorija Golubic.

Thankfully for the crowd inside the arena, the 18-year-old duly obliged as she battled to a 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 win, sparking wild scenes of celebration among the home side.

Belinda Bencic and Martina Hingis thrashed Olga Govortsova and Vera Lapko 6-0, 6-1 in the dead rubber doubles contest.

"You never win a tennis match by chance – football sometimes but not tennis – so there is no doubt that Belarus was the better team,” Switzerland coach Heinz Guenthardt said. 

“It seems to me that in key moments they were a little bit more courageous than we were and this sport does reward the courageous."

The United States moved to the brink of reaching a first final since 2010 when Coco Vandeweghe dropped just four games in a crushing 6-4, 6-0 win against Katerina Siniakova to give her side a 2-1 advantage.

Markéta Vondroušová then marked her Fed Cup debut by keeping her country in the competition with a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Lauren Davis, meaning the semi-final went to the deciding doubles rubber.

Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Vandeweghe teamed up in the doubles to comfortably sweep aside Siniakova and Kristýna Plíšková 6-2, 6-3. 

In the World Group play-offs, France beat Spain 4-0 at the Halle André Vacheresse in Roanne, while Germany edged the Ukraine 3-2 at the Porsche Arena in Stuttgart.

The Netherlands claimed an impressive 3-2 win away in Slovakia at the AEGON Arena in Bratislava.
