The International Tennis Federation (ITF) has provisionally suspended Romania’s Fed Cup captain Ilie Nastase after an incident during the nation’s clash with Great Britain yesterday.

Play had to be suspended for 25 minutes during the second rubber between Sorana Cirstea and Johanna Konta after the latter was reduced to tears.

It came after Nastase was ejected from the Tenis Club IDU in Constanta after getting in a row with the match umpire, Konta and Britain’s captain Anne Keothavong over the atmosphere inside the venue, which was getting fiesty.

He is alleged to have called Konta, the world number seven, and Keothavong “f****** bitches” and apparently swore at the umpire.

A day earlier, he was overheard making a derogatory remark towards Serena Williams and her unborn baby.

Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, who is white, has fathered the child with fiancé Williams, an African American.

During a pre-game press conference, Nastase was heard saying: “Let’s see what colour milk it has. Chocolate with milk.”

Following the outburst yesterday, the ITF banned Nastase from attending the rest of the match.

Today, they issued another statement saying he has been provisionally suspended for breaching the Fed Cup Welfare Policy.

“Under the terms of the provisional suspension, Nastase may not participate in the Fed Cup in any capacity with immediate effect, and shall be denied access to, and accreditation for any ITF event including the Fed Cup,” the ITF said.

“The investigation by the Internal Adjudication Panel is ongoing.”

Despite being banned, Nastase appeared to defy the ITF by attending the tie today, won by Romania, walking through the main entrance and going in the VIP area.

After his comments about Williams’ baby were reported in Britain, he stormed into the media room at the venue and lashed out at Eleanor Crooks, the Press Association’s tennis correspondent.

During the outburst, the 70-year-old repeatedly called her “stupid”.

At the pre-game press conference, Nastase, who won the 1972 US Open and 1973 French Open men's singles titles, was reported as asking Keothavong, who is pregnant, for her hotel room number.
