Serena Williams has heavily criticised Ilie Nastase over comments, which she branded racist and sexist, that the Romanian Fed Cup captain said during their match with Great Britain.

The United States tennis star posted a message on her Instagram profile discussing her views on what the 70-year-old said about Williams, her unborn baby, match officials, British women’s number one Johanna Konta and opposing captain Anne Keothavong.

Nastase, the 1972 US Open and 1973 French Open, was overheard saying during a press conference on Friday (April 21) before the Fed Cup tie “Let’s see what colour milk it has. Chocolate with milk” about Williams’ baby, due to be born later this year.

Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, who is white, is the father of the child with African American Williams.

At the same press conference, it was reported he had asked Keothavong, who is pregnant, for her hotel room number.

Then during the rubber between Konta and Sorana Cirstea a day later, Nastase was removed from the Tenis Club IDU in Constanta after arguing with the match umpire, Konta and Keothavong, allegedly swearing at them and calling the latter two “f****** bitches”, with play eventually suspended for 25 minutes after the world number seven burst into tears.

The International Tennis Federation (ITF) have provisionally banned the Romanian and are investigating the incident.

In her post, which can be read here, 23-time Grand Slam champion Williams said: “It disappoints me to know we live in a society where people like Ilie Nastase can make such racist comments towards myself and unborn child, and sexist comments against my peers.

“I have said it once and I’ll say it again, this world has come so far but yet we have so much further to go.

“Yes we have broken down so many barriers – however there are a plethora more to go.

“This or anything will not stop me from pouring love, light and positivity into everything that I do.

“I will continue to take a lead and stand up for what’s right.”

She then quoted a line from the poem Still I Rise by American civil rights activist Maya Angelou before finishing by saying the ITF have her “full support” in their investigations.

Despite being handed a ban and being told he was to take no further part in the Fed Cup match, Nastase still made an appearance at the tie yesterday, walking through the main entrance and going to the VIP area.

On Saturday before his on court outburst, Nastase also angrily shouted at British journalist Eleanor Crooks in the media room at the venue after his comments about Williams’ baby were reported, calling the Press Association’s tennis correspondent “stupid”.

Today, Nastase told the Daily Mirror newspaper that he had no qualms the on-court incident.

“I don't regret it and they can send me to prison if they want - I don't care,” he said.

“I was just trying to promote the interest of my girl.

“The English player just stormed off without even asking permission to leave the court and I admit that's when I called her a bitch.

“She kept trying to keep the crowd quiet - but it's not an opera, it's a game.

“I don't need this bulls***. I'm 70 years old.

“I don't even get paid for being team captain.

"I don't give a s*** if they fine me or don't let me sit in the captain's chair.”

Today, he did receive the support of another Romanian sporting icon, former Olympic champion gymnast Nadia Comaneci.

Speaking to media at the European Gymnastics Championships in Cluj, Comaneci, the first person to score a perfect 10 en route to gold at the Montreal 1976 Games, said everyone loves Nastase in Romania.

“Ilie is very patriotic and sometimes he says things that he doesn't really mean - it's just Ilie, and he will always be my friend,” she said.

“Of course Ilie is responsible for what comes out of his mouth and I think it is important in sport that you keep respect and good behaviour.

“He will have to deal with it, but he can survive whatever happens to him.”
