Georgia's Vladimir Khinchegashvili and Turkey’s Taha Akgul - who are both Rio 2016 Olympic champions - will be among the star attractions at this week’s United World Wrestling (UWW) European Championships in Novi Sad.

The duo, who are also the reigning world champions, will take part in freestyle competitions at the Spens Sports Hall.

Neither man will be in action on the opening day, which will begin with the men's 57 and 86 kilogram competitions.

The women's 48kg and 63kg disciplines will also be contested tomorrow.

Azerbaijan’s Mariya Stadnik could secure a seventh consecutive European title in the women's 48kg competition on the opening day.

Khinchegashvili will enter the venue on the third day of the Championships, with the men's 57kg Olympic champion seeking to defend his European title in the 61kg event.

He could face competition from two-time world champion Haji Aliev of Azerbaijan and Russia's Akhmed Chakaev.

Akgul will be among the highlights on Friday (May 5), as the Turkish wrestler vies for the men's 125kg title.

He suffered a surprise early defeat at last year's event to eventually end in 10th, which will see the three-time champion return with extra motivation.

Rio bronze medalist Geno Petriashvili of Georgia will stand in Akgul's way, as he seeks to defend the title he earned in Riga last year.

While freestyle and women's wrestling action will draw the public’s attention on the opening four days, Greco-Roman wrestling will close the event with action taking place on May 6 and 7.

Davor Stefanek will carry home hopes, with the Rio 2016 Olympic champion set to represent Serbia in the 66kg division.
