The International Boxing Association (AIBA) has signed an exclusive global marketing agreement with Alisports, the sport division of Chinese e-commerce giants Alibaba.

It is the latest deal penned by the two organisations after they signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in January 2016 which agreed to the development and promotion of boxing around the world.

The deal includes "significant investment" into AIBA competitions, media and digital platforms, as well as the creation of an AIBA internet television channel.

The agreement will also "harness Alisports' enormous capacity for increasing the digital and social engagement of AIBA events" as well as developing and marketing AIBA competitions, including the World Series of Boxing (WSB).

Alisports will also develop and operate boxing e-sports and fitness boxing for AIBA.

"From our very first conversations to the signing of this important deal for the future of boxing, AIBA has welcomed Alisports' valued input and we are pleased to be partnering with a company that shares our vision for the sport and is such a significant player in the world of e-commerce," said AIBA President C K Wu.

"The Alibaba Group's reach and track record speaks for itself, and this agreement, alongside their recent sponsorship deal with the International Olympic Committee, displays their deep commitment to investing in sports around the world.

"AIBA has made significant strides in all areas in recent months and the commercial partnership strategy we are currently growing and consolidating is an essential aspect of our global approach for the next Olympic cycle."

The agreement takes effect from January 1, 2018, with the next season of the the WSB among the first events set to "feel the impact of the investment".

"Alisports is honoured and excited to partner with AIBA, a dynamic and forward-thinking International Federation with whom we share a passion for innovation and an unswerving belief in the power of sport," said Alisports founder and chief executive Dazhong Zhang.

"We will be bringing our expertise to promote boxing around the world, and look forward to taking the prestigious AIBA brand and its biggest boxing tournaments to the next level in terms of their exposure and marketability."

As part of the MoU between AIBA and Alisports, the two organisations aimed to raise awareness of boxing and the value of AIBA competitions.

Under the terms of the agreement, they also work together in key areas such as commercial development rights, operational funds, internet technology and big data mining and applications.

Focus was placed upon delivering exclusive matches and events, as well as working on producing massive platform membership services and extended e-commerce product lines.
