Taekwondo New Zealand has congratulated Olympian Robin Cheong after she was appointed to the World Taekwondo Federation's (WTF) Athletes' Commission.

The 28-year-old will represent the Oceania region alongside Australian Olympian Ryan Carneli.

Athletes from the sport's five other continental unions will also be part of the body, which advises the WTF's ruling Council.

The first meeting of the Athletes' Commission will be held alongside the WTF World Championships in Muju in South Korea in June.

"I am very pleased to announce that our two-time Olympian Robin Cheong has been appointed onto the WTF Athletes' Commission," said NZ Taekwondo President Tae Kyung Kim, a WTF Council member.

"Congratulations to Robin on her appointment in this important role."

Cheong reached the quarter-finals of the women's 57 kilograms division at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

She also competed in the weight category four years later at London 2012 but lost her preliminary round bout against Egypt's Hedaya Wahba.

New Zealand sent one competitor to the Olympic taekwondo tournament at Rio 2016 in August.

Andrea Kilday competed in the women's under-49 kilograms category, but lost to home Brazilian athlete Iris Sing in the first round.

Kilday qualified for the Olympics by winning gold at the Oceania Taekwondo Championships.
