USA Taekwondo has announced that registration for their National Championships in Detroit this year is now open.

The governing body have invited athletes who have qualified through the various state competitions to register for the event, which runs from June 29 to July 6 at the Cobo Center.

Eligible competitors have until June 15 to submit their entry for the competition, which USA Taekwondo claim could attract up to 4,000 participants.

Action is due to take place in a total of 827 different divisions, with thousands of matches scheduled across the different disciplines including sparring - both able bodied and Para - poomsae, board breaking and demo teams.

The event also serves as the national team trials for cadet and junior sparring, as well as poomsae.

It comes after the 2016 edition of the National Championships were heralded as a huge success by the organisation.

"We'd like to thank the Detroit Sports Commission for their help working with us to get this locked down - it's been a pleasure working with them and we have total confidence in their ability to help us deliver another world class event," USA Taekwondo events director Jeanna Salgado said when Detroit was confirmed as hosts.

"Detroit is a great city and a fantastic location for Nationals, with convenient and affordable access from just about anywhere in the country.

"It's going to be a great event."

The USA Taekwondo National Championships are due to begin the day before the conclusion of the World Championships in the South Korean city of Muju.

The World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) sanctioned event is scheduled to take place from June 23 to 30.
