The inaugural World Beach Taekwondo Championships are due to begin on the Greek island of Rhodes, where 643 athletes will battle it out for honours.

Two days of competition at the Nautical Club of Rhodes will follow tomorrow’s Opening Ceremony at the Bastion of the Grand Master's Palace.

All participants at the Ceremony will be able to give a message of peace as part of the Peace and Sport White Card campaign.

Medals are set to be awarded across four methods of competition - recognised poomsae, freestyle poomsae, technical breaking and freestyle dynamic kicks and breaking challenge.

"This inaugural event embraces the development of a new taekwondo movement in a synergy between sport, education and social responsibility actions, as the Taekwondo Humanitarian Foundation has already set the way towards," Chungwon Choue, President of the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF), said.

"The Organising Committee, in alliance with the Local Government bodies, made this event a reality and united the taekwondo family for one more time on this exquisite place.

"Rhodes island is a luminous and beautiful place, ideal to host successful outdoor sport events.

"It is also a great pleasure to collaborate with Peace and Sport during the Opening Ceremony of the Championships and hold the biggest White Card campaign in Rhodes' medieval city, which is preserved as a World Heritage monument.

"The first WTF World Taekwondo Beach Championships sets the way towards the ANOC (Association of National Olympic Committees) World Beach Games in San Diego in 2019 and embodies taekwondo in a new community outside of the sport stadiums, before a whole new audience.

"I am sure that this will be the most enjoyable taekwondo event we have ever staged, in a scenery full of history, culture, sunshine, and a region famous of its awarded local cuisine."

Choue will be present at the Opening Ceremony alongside his European counterpart Sakis Pragalos and Fotis Chatzidiakos, Mayor of Rhodes City.

Other dignitaries who are due to appear at the show include South Korea's Greek Ambassador Youngjip Ahn and George Chatzimarkos, Governor of the South Aegean region.

"It is an honour for the ETU (European Taekwondo Union) to have been designated to organise this pioneering event on the island of Rhodes, Greece," Pragalos said.

"The historic city of Rhodes, which has been successfully carrying out many milestone sport events for years now, will host the inaugural championships.

"The European Taekwondo Union, along with the remarkable support from the local authorities and population will demonstrate not only one more step towards the development of the sport, but also the hospitality of this beautiful island in welcoming athletes, coaches, and sport officials from all over the world.

"The participating national teams will compete in the middle of a landscape surrounded by the blue of the sky and the sea."

The event comes just before the 2017 ETU European Poomsae Championships, which are also set to be hosted by Rhodes from May 7 to 8.
