Croatia's Rio 2016 Olympic silver medallist Damir Martin successfully made it through to the final of the men's single sculls event on day two of the first World Rowing Cup of the season in Belgrade.

Martin finished second to Switzerland's Nico Stahlberg on the Sava Lake in their heat yesterday, but proved too strong for the rest of the field today as he won the first semi-final.

He is joined in the final by Vladislav Ryabcev of Russia, who qualified from the heats with the fastest time, and Marko Marjanovic of hosts Serbia.

The trio will meet Stahlberg, Stefan Broenink of The Netherlands and Belarus' Stanislau Shcharbachenia in tomorrow's final after all three qualified from the second semi-final.

Ireland's Olympic silver medallists Gary and Paul O'Donovan cruised to victory in their lightweight men's double sculls semi-final, beating The Netherlands and Spain.

The O'Donovans pulled clear after the halfway stage and never looked troubled as they crossed the line with ease.

Britain's Peter Chambers and Will Fletcher won the second semi-final.

Rio 2016 silver medallist Vicky Thornley will race in the final of the women's single sculls.

The British rower was beaten by Switzerland's Jeannine Gmelin yesterday but won by nearly three seconds from Ireland's Sanita Puspure, having led from start to finish today.

In the men's pair there was further British success as Jacob Dawson and Matthew Rossiter won their semi-final.

The Belarus duo of Dzimitry Furman and Siarhei Valadzko finished in second while the Czech combination of Jakub Podrazil and Lukas Helesic secured third.

Serbia's Nenad Bedik and Milos Vasic, Mitchel Steenman and Mechiel Versluis of The Netherlands and Belarus' Mikalai Sharlap and Ihar Pashevich also booked their places in tomorrow's final after finishing first, second and third respectively in the second qualifying race.

Reigning European Champion Lukas Babac of Serbia narrowly qualified for the lightweight men's single sculls final.

Babac finished a disappointing third in his semi-final behind Hungary’s Peter Galambos, the winner of the race, and Croatia's Luka Radonic.

Switzerland's Michael Schmid claimed victory in the second qualifying race and moves into tomorrow's gold medal race.

Poland's Artur Mikolajczewski, who finished sixth at Rio 2016, and Belgium's Niels Van Zandweghe also qualified from the second semi-final.

Racing is set to conclude tomorrow with the finals.
