Ramin Taherisartang was one of three Iranian gold medallists on the opening day of Greco-Roman action at the Asian Wrestling Championships in India’s capital New Delhi, completing a hat-trick of titles at the annual event.

The 22-year-old battled to a 3-1 victory over South Korea’s Kim Junehyoung in the 80 kilograms final at the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex.

Taherisartang captured his first Asian crown at 71kg in 2015 and then successfully moved up to 80kg last year.

"It’s a hat-trick, and it’s different from the first and second medals," he said.

"I’m so happy.

"I want to take this colour medal at the World Championships."

Home favourite Harpreet Singh beat China’s Na Junjie in one of the two bronze medal matches and was joined on the third step of the podium by Kyrgyzstan’s Samat Shirdakov, who proved too strong for Kazakhstan’s Danyal Gajiyev.

Iran also triumphed in the two heaviest weight categories with Seyedmostafa Salehizadeh taking the 98kg gold and Behnam Mehdizadeh following with a victory at 130kg.

Salehizadeh dominated his clash with South Korea’s Kim Seungjun, winning by technical fall by building up a 14-4 advantage.

In contrast, the final between Mehdizadeh and Kazakhstan’s Damir Kuzembayev was a much tighter encounter with the Iranian prevailing 3-1.

The bronze medals at 98kg went to Uzbekistan’s Rustam Assakalov and Kazakhstan’s Yerulan Iskakov at the expense of Tajikistan’s Azizdzhon Zaripov and China’s Xiao Di respectively.

At 130kg, the sole bronze medal contest saw South Korea’s Kim Minseok overcame Japan’s Arata Sonoda.

Arguably the most eye-catching performance was produced by South Korea’s Oh Sanghun, who followed up his giant-killings in the morning session by edging Kazakhstan’s Almat Kebispayev in the 66kg final.

Earlier, Oh had defeated Rio 2016 Olympic bronze medallist Elmurat Tasmuradov of Uzbekistan in the quarter-finals and Iran’s Ali Arsalan in the semi-finals.

Arsalan defeated Tasmuradov in their bronze medal contest, while the other was won by China’s Dong Jinxin ahead of Japan’s Shogo Takahashi.

The other gold medal at stake, that in the 75kg division, went to Kazakhstan’s Maxat Yerezhepov after he used a big four-point throw to clinch a 5-0 victory over South Korea’s Park Daeseung.

Victory ends Yerezhepov’s long wait for a gold medal having won two bronzes and a silver from 2012 to 2014.

In the bronze medal matches, China’s Yang Bin beat India’s Gurpreet Singh and Tajikistan’s Bakhtovar Khasanov defeated Chinese Taipei’s Chen Yu-Ching.

The event is due to continue tomorrow when medals will be awarded in the Greco-Roman 59kg, 71kg and 85kg categories and the women’s 63kg and 75kg divisions.
