Morocco enjoyed an emphatic start to the African Sambo Championships in the Seychelles today as they won three gold medals.

Mohammed Zelmoumi won his country's first title when he prevailed in the men's 57 kilograms sport sambo event at the Roche Caiman Sports Complex in Victoria.

He got the better of Seyni Abdul Rashid of Niger 7-3 in the final to win the gold medal.

Abderrahim El Quercy then won a second gold for Morocco in the men's 68kg competition.

El Quercy proved too strong for Tarek Mohamed Sadf of Tunisia and defeated him 8-3 on points.

The men's finals on day one drew to a close with the 82kg event, where the Moroccan gold rush ended.

They were forced to settle for silver after Marouane Oulhadzh was beaten on points by Cameroon's Luis Messi.

In the women's categories, there was heartbreak for the hosts in the opening final of the evening.

Cameroon's Paola Sitcheping managed to get opponent, Mari Sheril Ellya of the Seychelles, into a choke early on in their contest and went on to take the gold medal in the 64kg event.
