A booth is due to appear at the upcoming Canadian Open Judo Championships so members of the public can make donations to the Calgary Food Bank.

The competition is taking place between May 25 and 28 at the Olympic Oval in Calgary and those attending can make either a financial or food donation to the charity as part of the event.

In order to encourage judo fans to contribute to the charitable organisation, Judo Canada has provided 300 posters signed by Antoine Valois-Fortier, bronze medallist judoka at London 2012, and Priscilla Gagné, a Paralympic judoka.

Both are due to make appearances at the championships.

Attendees who make a monetary donation will receive one of the signed posters.

“It makes us very happy to be able to give back to the community," Judo Canada chief executive, Nicolas Gill, said.

Following last year's Championships, also held in Calgary, Judo Canada made a donation of CAD$2,500 (£1,400/$1,800/€1,600).

The money went towards those who were affected by the wildfire in Fort McMurray.

“We’re not funded by the government so it’s imperative that we receive help from organisations like the Canadian Judo Championships," added Shawna Ogston, the communications and media relations coordinator for the Calgary Food Bank.

"We truly appreciate Judo Canada’s support."

The food bank was established in 1982 and relies solely on donations from local people.

Last week, Judo Canada announced that an agreement had been signed with biosports.team, the organisation's first private sponsorship deal.

The partnership will see biosports.team become title sponsor of Judo Canada’s largest national competition.
