The International Surfing Association (ISA) have supported the French Surfing Association (FFS) to create the app before its flagship event begins this month.

Available on both iOS and Android, the app will allow users to live-stream the action from anywhere in the world.

It will also provide fans with news, statistics, results, photographs and videos throughout the event.

"We are thrilled to support the local organisers in this key initiative," said ISA President Fernando Aguerre.

"The launch of this app is a great step forward for the ISA, and how we deliver our events through contemporary media tools. 

"This is an example of how we want to look at new and innovative ways of engaging our fan base and engaging with youth, especially as we move forwards towards Tokyo 2020.

"This app will set a new precedent of how people watch our sport. 

"It will combine live streams with real-time updates that you need to follow the competition in as much detail as possible. 

"We hope that this app can set a precedent for how we engage digitally moving forward and in Tokyo.

"It will also help us to get more fans interested in our sport in non-traditional surfing nations. 

"By providing the live-stream, content and information in one, digestible app, competition will be easier to follow for newcomers, and we will open up to a new wave of surfing fan."

Biarritz, in the south-west of France, will host competition between May 20 and 28. 

The city was named as host in September, with the event returning to Europe for the first time since 2008 when it was held in Costa da Caparica in Portugal.

Last year's edition of the Games took place between August 6 and 14 in Playa Jacó in Costa Rica.

The World Surfing Games were last held in Biarritz in 1980, when legendary American surfer Tom Curren launched his successful career by taking the gold medal in the junior division.

Last month, it was announced that this year's action will be broadcast on the Olympic Channel after a deal was struck with the ISA.

The governing body claims to be "embracing technology" as surfing prepares for its Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020.
