A number of performers will feel their chances of gold are high at the 2017 European Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships in Budapest as three leading stars of recent years will not be at the event.

The field heading to the Hungarian capital tomorrow will not feature 13-time continental champion Russia's Yana Kudryavtseva, who retired from rhythmic gymnastics in January at the age of 19 as the silver medallist at the Rio 2016 Olympics in the all-round event despite her build-up being affected by a fractured foot.

A missed catch at the end of her clubs routine proved the difference in a tightly contested competition, as Kudryavtseva was edged to gold by her compatriot Margarita Mamun, who also will not be at the László Papp Sportaréna as she is taking a break from the sport.

Along with these two, Ukraine's Ganna Rizatdinova, the bronze medallist from Rio 2016, is also not going to compete in Budapest.

Only two former European Championships individual medallists are set to compete in the Hungarian capital with Belarusian Katsiaryna Halkina and Azerbaijan’s Marina Durunda due to take part.

The Russian team includes 2015 European team champion Aleksandra Soldatova and the Averina twins, Dina and Arina.

All three gymnasts have impressed in recent competitions.

However, they face tough competition from Bulgaria’s Neviana Vladinova who won the all-around event at the World Cup meeting in Sofia last weekend.

Halkina will be joined by Belarusian team-mate Alina Harnasko, who impressed in the European Junior Championships in Holon in Israel last year.

Viktoria Mazur and Olena Diachenko will represent Ukraine.

Other notable entrants include France’s Kseniya Moustafaeva, Azerbaijan’s Marina Durunda and Israel’s Linoy Ashram.

The hopes of the host nation will rest on the shoulders of Alexandra Kis, Mira Varay and Fanny Pigniczcki.

Action is due to begin tomorrow with qualification rounds dominating the first two days.

All apparatus finals will then be held on Sunday (May 21).
