Russia’s recurve women’s team achieved a surprise win over Olympic champions South Korea on their way to securing a place in the gold medal match at the Archery World Cup in Shanghai.

The Russian team had suffered defeat in the Rio 2016 Olympic final to South Korea, but had the opportunity for revenge when Natalia Erdynieva, Sayana Tsyrempilova and Ksenia Perova booked their place in the quarter-finals today.

The trio were able to claim victory against the top seeds Chang Hye Jin, Kang Chae Young and Choi Misun, winning the contest 6-0.

Eighth seeded Russia then earned a 5-3 win over China to book their place in the gold medal match,” said Erdynieva.

“From beginning to end we were just shooting our arrows without thinking who we were shooting against.

“We’re happy with the results and making the gold medal match is something we deserve for shooting so well today.”

The United States will meet Russia in the final, after they defeated Malaysia 6-0 in their semi-final.

South Korea had better fortune in the men’s recurve team event, as they justified their status as top seeds by reaching the gold medal match.

They secured a comfortable 6-0 win over France to set up a clash with Kazakhstan, who edged Japan 5-4 in the second semi-final.

Individual recurve competitions also began today, but the top seeds were able to enjoy byes to the through some of the early rounds.

Top men’s recurve seed Kim Woojin of South Korea will enter the event in the third round, where he will take on Saudi Arabia’s Fares Mater Alotaibi.

South Korea’s Chang Hye Jin will begin the women’s event with a third round tie against Shin Hui Loke of Malaysia.

Compound team competition reached the semi-final stage, with India’s men’s team beating the United States 232-230 to reach the gold medal match.

They will meet Colombia in the final, after the South Americans won 231-229 against France.

South Korea beat Russia 229-222 in the first women’s semi-final, while Denmark edged Chinese Taipei 231-230.
