Britain's Richard Kruse claimed a superb victory today at the International Fencing Federation's (FIE) Foil Grand Prix in Shanghai.

It helped made partial amends for the disappointment of his fourth place finish at last year's Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

The 33-year-old defeated Italian opponent Alessio Foconi 15-8 in today's final at the Jing An Gym Arena.

Kruse, a four-time Olympian, repeated a victory over Foconi in the final of the team competition at the Baku 2015 European Games.

He had earlier beaten Frenchman Erwan le Pechoux of France 15-13 in the semi-final.

Foconi had defeated Dmitriy Zherebchenko of Russia 15-9 at that stage.

Le Pechoux and Zherebchenko each took bronze.

It followed Martina Batini's victory yesterday for Italy in the corresponding women's competition.
