Former world number one Ratchanok Intanon began her quest for the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Thailand Open title on home soil with a straight-games victory in Bangkok.

Top seed Intanon, the world number eight who won the world title in 2013, beat India's Rituparna Das 21-19, 21-18 at the Nimibutr Stadium in the Thai capital.

Japan's Sayaka Takahashi, who progressed with a comfortable 21-6, 21-8 win against Indonesia's Febby Angguini, awaits for Intanon in the next round tomorrow.

Indian star Saina Nehwal, the Olympic bronze medallist at London 2012, is also through as she overcame Slovakia's Martina Repiska 21-5, 21-10.

The number two seed has been drawn to face Ying Ying Lee of Malaysia in round two.

It proved to be a largely straightforward day for the seeded players in the women's competition as Beiwen Zhang of the United States ousted Airi Mikkela of Finland.

Zhang, the third seed, took just 19 minutes to claim a 21-4, 21-11 victory.

The American player will take on Indonesia's Ruselli Hartawan in the second round.

There was further success for the host nation as men's top seed Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk eased into round three by defeating India's Pratul Joshi.

Saensomboonsuk, who was a member of the Thai team which won bronze at last week's Sudirman Cup alongside Intanon, clinched a 21-17, 21-9 triumph.

The 26-year-old, a former Southeast Asian Games men's singles champion, will clash with team-mate Suppanyu Avihingsanon, the 16th seed, in the next round.

Second seed Marc Zwiebler of Germany also accounted for an Indian player as he joined Saensomboonsuk in progressing.

Zwiebler proved too strong for Parupalli Kashyap and emerged on the right side of a 21-14, 21-18 scoreline.

Joo Ven Soong will be Zwiebler's opponent when action resumes tomorrow.
